Roberta's
customers say when they go to a restaurant, they don't tuck
thier Little Birdy Bags under the table. Rather they place
them "right smack in the center" as something to
be displayed. "They are wearable art," notes Roberta.
"They can change an outfit. IF you go to a black tie
[event], and you have a handbag that makes a statement, it's
not just a little black dress anymore."
"Capital Pride," the
handbag Roberta designed for the First Lady is her all-time
faveorite creation. Dotted with Swarovski crystal, the bag
twinkles at night, bringing to life depictions of the Capitol
on one side and the Washington Monument on the other. Swarovski
is the only type of crystal ROberta uses because it "has
fire," as opposed to other crystals that are "flat."
Roberta's signature piece is
"The Cammie Bag," featuring Ultrasuede zebra fabric
with a Victorian cameo. While this bag has inspired her to
create many variations, each one features a cameo inside her
to create many variations, each one features a cameo inside
a velvet flower. She repeats the design with different cameos
and different fabrics, always trying to mix something old
and new. Striking and dramatic, each variation of the Cammie
is breathtaking and unique.
Many of Roberta's bags reflect
an Asian influence through the use of elegant and dramatic
animal prints. "I think about what people wear,"
says Roberta. "A lot of people wear black, and anumal
prints are also very big now, so if you were to go out and
had on an animal print, you would want something that would
complement
rather than fight with your outfit. If you're a busy person,
and you don't have many little bags, you might want to purchase
a bag featuring a tiger or zebra that's going to complement
a lot of your outfits. I try to do things that work, so the
customer won't be limited to wearing the bag with just one
outfit."
The many textures on these bags
reflect mixed media and a three-dimensional look. For a unique
tiger design, Roberta uses bamboo shoots surrounding the tiger;
the toenails are crystal so they twinkle, and the eyes are
emerald green jewels.
"Most all the jewels I
use are vintage," says Roberta. "They date back
to the 20s and the 40s, and I could never duplicate the bags
because I don't know if I could ever find these pieces again."
Roberta recently launched a
new fall collection featuring handpainted image by local artist
Julie Hoyt. Roberta's bags are available at Zaidee Coco in
Great Falls and Reston Town Center and Silk Purse in McLean.
If you happen to be in Nantucket, you can find her bags at
Vis-a-vis, Ltd.
Little Birdy Bags are truly
one-of-a-kind. Where else can a woman find a handbag with
a pocket mirror inside, under which is inscribed the line:
"You're the fairest one of all"? Article Page
